Welcome back, summer! After a somewhat uncertain start, we're finally here: welcome summer!
Although meteorological summer begins on June 1, it is only with the solstice that the season generally kicks off. This year it falls today, June 20, at precisely 10:50 p.m.
The word "solstice" comes from the Latin term "solstitium," which means "sun standing still," and the day of the solstice is celebrated in many cultures as it marks the peak of sunlight and the beginning of the gradual shortening of the days until the winter solstice.
For almost all of us, summer means light, joy, relaxation, sun and sea, trips out of town, outdoor lunches, barbecues with friends, pool parties, lazing on the beach, and much, much more.
